Managing Risk is ‘priority for Board of Directors’

Serving in a leadership role at a housing provider, as a Board Director of the corporation, is an important undertaking. By agreeing to be a Director or Officer, one assumes a number of responsibilities for the behaviour and actions of the corporation you represent. However, some Directors and Officers (D&Os) are unaware of the full meaning of this- that they can be held personally responsible for liability associated with the duties or actions of the corporation.

HSC has developed a training guide to support social housing providers, Board of Directors and municipal housing administrators to learn about governance risk and how to effectively manage and mitigate risk. This webinar goes through some of the key content in the training guide.

You will learn:

  • the varying forms (i.e., principal vs. operational) and nature of housing provider risks
  • the role of Directors and Officers and their obligations
  • actions that can be taken by Directors to become more aware of the issues during the course of their governing mandate
  • value of Board indemnity
  • building governance capacity

Speaker bio:

Brian Laur is Director, Insurance Services, Housing Services Corporation (HSC) and is responsible for leading the corporations insurance and risk management business unit. He plays a critical role in assisting Service Managers and Housing providers take proactive and practical approaches to overall risk management.

Before coming to HSC, Brian served for eight years as the Risk Manager for Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC), where he put a strong emphasis on customer service and clear communication. At TCHC, he also led a risk management intern program for young tenants, which resulted in the hiring of a claims coordinator who had a deep understanding of the organization from a tenant perspective. Before TCHC, Brian worked as a Senior Risk Management Analyst for the City of Toronto.

Kisha Reddish is Manager, Insurance Services at Housing Services Corporation and works with Service Manager and Housing providers to address insurance and risk management for social housing properties and its tenants across Ontario.

Keisha is a Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) with a BA in Political Science and over 16 years in the property and casualty insurance industry. She has facilitated various claims training programs at some of Canada’s largest insurance companies, and is skilled in developing and testing metrics for internal claims fraud.
